This Christmas...

Christmas this year was simple; not much of a drama, not much of a hectic schedule. I wasn't much involve in this year's Christmas production and it made me feel kind of left out. Blame it on having something on every Christmas; this year was a resting year. Maybe it's a good thing.

After coming back from Laos, I couldn't seem to get down into business. Damn, I think my soul is still backpacking in Laos. A few more days left before 2008 comes to an end, let me just slack it off lah!

Camp is like tomorrow until new year's eve, school's opening on the 2nd Jan.. 2009 is approaching fast; not enough time to think.. 2009 will be good, it will.

Oh man.. 21.

Luang Pa Bang (15th December,Of sleeping in, sun set and 12 hour bus ride)

By the time I woke up, it's 11a.m. Gloria was nowhere in sight, I saw the laptop gone and knew that she's out blogging some where. We checked out by noon cause we were leaving at 7.3op.m that evening to Vientiane. The journey was suppose to take 10 hours, but after 2 bus rides in Laos, we learn to think beyond; we gave it 12 hours.

Gloria wanted her egg with lots of veggies again and I was craving for my bbq fish since the previous night. We pass by this eating place and it look nice to eat in. We went to get the egg and once again she bump into the guy she met in Vientiane and Vang Vien. They chatted while I looked on.

After lunch we took a walk around the river side. The Mekong river was beautiful, it felt like there was so much life in that river. We stopped by this bar by the river and settle down for our last beer lao. Photo whored the whole afternoon before hiking up to Pussie Mountain to catch the sun set. Ran into some of Gloria's friend, it's such a small world after all.

We bought dinner and then head off to the bus station. On the bus already, that woman suddenly remembered that I didn't remind her to take her charger and it's still in the guesthouse! We were like "oh shit!" Glor wanted me to get her a new charger for christmas (which isn't a problem) but meanwhile she wouldn't be able to use her camera for a good few days. I urged her to go back and take, let the bus wait (it's going to wait by the way). She headed back and when she went off, I then realise she didn't wear her sweater along... She froze all the way.

Gloria took quite awhile and I grew worried. In my heart I was like, "Forget the charger lah, just come back safe." Wonder why the heck did I had those thoughts. Finally she came back and pheeeeeeew! The charger was back. The bus moved but it wasn't long before it stopped again to wait for people. Laos transport.

The toilet stops were fantastic. We stopped in the middle of no where, totally pitch black and had to do our business there. The guys had it easy, we girls have to go behind the buses and space out to do it. But it was fun. The moon was vey bright and the stars were many. After toilet, we just stood around looking at the moon and stars. If it wasn't for the cold cold weather, we would have stayed longer. I remember telling myself before boarding the bus.. "This is one heck of an experience!"

Luang Pa Bang (14th December, of Kuang Xi Water Fall, jumping into cold water and rubber band noodles)

We wanted to wake up a 6a.m to catch what Luang Pa Bang's morning would be like. The alarm rang and rang, we snoozed and snoozed. Finally I just stuck my phone up Glor's ears and that's it. We slept somemore and woke up like 10a.m. We didn't know what to do, where to go or what's gonna happen. In the end we decided on dropping by Kuang Xi Water Fall, which is a good 40km away. Our guesthouse owner offered to drive us there for 150 000 kips per tuk tuk. We thought Toby might want to come along, which will make the cost lower. But he met his lady lao and got company. We bargained with that guy and in the end settled for 130 000 kips.

The water fall was nice, blue water and not forgetting freakingly cold as well. This time I was more daring then the swinging moments, I keep asking Gloria if she wants to jump in. We did, we jumped from the tree and then from the cliffs. When Gloria told me that she's jumping straight in without getting into the water first, I stared as her as though she was from space. I was like, "You're kidding me right? We're gonna die!" That crazy woman did jump in the end and I follow. As you can see, we didn't die.

We spend a good half hour in that cold water before heading back. The day past by quickly, mainly because we sleep half of it away. Headed back to town, shopped awhile before Gloria's hunger took over her. When Gloria is hungry, do not do anything funny with her.

We settled for Pad Thai by the road side bar. Gloria said the man must have ran out of noodles and went to the shop to grap rubber bands instead. Those noodles really do taste like rubber bands. We had our beer lao and then off to another round of massage. The massage place was comfortable, I could so fall asleep in there.

Back at the guesthouse we wanted to watch bukle's list, but again that woman was too sleepy and fell asleep..

Vang Vien - Luang Pra Bang (13th December, of Stolen Money, Hang Overs and Hellish Bus Ride)

I woke up in the morning, feeling quite lost of what happened the night before. My feet was freaking cold as I didn't change into my longs. We were suppose to leave Vang Vien today and travel to Luang Pra Bang, futher up North. While packing I realise my wallet got seriously thin. I opened up and notice the whole stack of US notes and RMs were gone.

"Someone stole money!"

We checked our belongings and it seem like only my money was gone. Which is strange! My wallet was burried under Glor's mountains of stuff, who would know that there's a wallet there? Glor's laptop was out in the open, her wallet was in the room too; but nothing was missing except my cash. We didn't have time to think that much as we were being rushed to board the bus.

Having a serious hang over, I didn't want to think a lot too. We travelled a short distant before being made to change to another bus. The seats were all full and I sat beside this english guy from London named Toby. Chatted for awhile, he used to play rugby too! It wasn't long before my hang over took over me; I had to close my eyes and sleep. I was so afraid that I will puke.

The journey was suppose to take 6 hours, but we took like 7.5 hours. During which every 1 or 2 hours there are dirty water pouring on me from the aircon. For someone having a hang over, every sudden movement would cause me to puke. I had no strength to curse also, I just let it pour on me as I sleep. We spend the whole day in the bus and by the time we reach Luang Pra Bang it was evening time. By then I am already quite awake from the hang over.

We found a guesthouse soon, which I think I like best through the trip. Homely feeling and they offers free bananas and tea. We checked in and was offered 70 000 kips per night. The owner came into the room and we went, "So, it's 70 000 kips yeah?" And he went, "You don't talk so loudly. It's suppose to be 80 000 kips, but I charge you 70 000 ok? You don't let the guy know."

Toby tried to post as a poor backpacker, but no luck. We met Gloria's friend's friend, Sir Liang, who works in a hotel there. He brought us to dinner and Gloria told him our sappy story of being robbed. The dinner was nice with Koi Soy (minced pork noodles), BBQed fish, chicken, sticky rice and a bottle of Mirinda Orange. I wasn't a pork fan, so I had some struggles muching down those pork. We walked around the night market and bump into the Malaysian family I met at the airport. Gloria and I serioulsy need a massage from the bus ride, so we hunt down one. It was my first time getting massaged and by a guy. It releases some tension and we head back to guesthouse.

Outside the guesthouse we saw a basin with charchoes and cats sleeping in it. We sat there for awhile playing with them and they crawled onto our laps for warmth. Wanted to watch Wall-E but it hanged in the beginning, but the time it came unhanged, Gloria was already sleeping. I stared at her for quite some time, no use, she's deep into her dreamland. So, I did some reading and slept as well.

What a day.. hang overs, hellish bus rides, new people, interesting food and a nice massage to end it off.

Vang Vien (12th December, of Kayaking, swingings and getting waaaay drunk)

I woke up at 5a.m, it felt like I have slept a long time. The woman beside me was still sound asleep in her dreamland. I slept somemore, waiting for the day to break and the adventure to begin. Gloria woke up at 7.30, thinking it was 8.30 already; she forgot she's in Laos and Laos is one hour behind Singapore. She jumped about for nothing. We had a quick wash and headed to the meeting area. We bought breakfast, some kind of egg and chicken sandwitch but all we tasted was eggs. We sat infront of the tuk tuk with the morning air brushing by us as we travel.

We reached the river and took quite a long walk to the cave. While waiting for our turns to tube in the cave, we sat around, played with duckies and got to know people. There were a few very noisy Aussies and Ireland guys, 1 South African couple, 1 USA couple, a group of Thai people and us. The water was freezing cold when we got it. The cave was nothing spectacular but still interesting. Tons of flies and who knows what in the water. It was hard getting our way through around the cave, so most of the time we hung on the guide to glide on. After tubing, we had BBQ for lunch and my first beer lao in Laos.

After tubing we move on to kayaking in Nam Song River. The whole journey was about 10km with stops in between. The river was nice with currents once in a while. We stopped by 2 places for swing jumpings and the sliding. I went on 2 swings and the last one nearly killed me. It was nearly 3 stories high, we swang out like tarzan and then let go and fall into the water. I fell with my butt hitting the water first, imagine the pain! The swing jumping was fun, but somehow I wasn't ready for it... Next time!! My girlfriend, Gloria, was crazy. She went on both swings and the slide! We beer lao-ed some more at those stations before kayaking the rest of the way back. We got stucked half way and the guides have to come pick us up :P I think we were the most troublesome pair that day.

The Thai guys wanted to go Smile Bar that night for the full moon party. Since it's my first time into such party, might as well follow. Furthermore I'm travelling with a party girl. We dinnered at a local eatery, sitting by the road sit sipping hot noodles and soup in the cold. We took some time to find Smile Bar and when we did, it wasn't as crazy as expected. We found the Thai people, joined their huts and the drinking began.

Whisky bucket for 10 000 kips (SD1.80), the same for the rest of the booze and beer. We bought a few buckets to share, by the end of those buckets I was a little shagged already (not forgetting we were beer lao-ing the whole day). Then Gloria went on to order shots for everyone. The poison that killed me? Some really strong shot that smelled like the candy I hated in Iceland. I was floating by then and threw chunks after. Gloria met another guy she met in Vientiane and I remembered going forward and say, "No! She's my girlfriend you know?" I was really getting off my feet and Gloria had to send me back straight. It took quite a while. I didn't want to go back, wanted to go somewhere, fooled around, showed her I could walk and even run straight, sat on the road and Glor even had to tackle me back. Damn, when I'm that drunk. So drunk, but I still manage to take off my contact lens and head to bed. The rest was history or I remember nuts about it. It was damn stupid of me, so so so stupid to think about it now. But then, whatever happends stays in that country. Thank goodness Glor is a good drinker. I remember saying to her, "You're not drunk? You're good!"

And then I slept..

Highlights of that day?

Kuala Lumpur - Vientiane - Vang Vien (11th December, The Lesbian Couple)

I woke up at 4.15a.m, took a shower and by the time I finish packing, Shirly was already waiting for me at the door. We waited for her friend to come pick us up at the foyer and chatted under the morning sky. She told me all about Malaysian's education system, how the teachers and holidays there work. Once again, I gave thanks that Singapore don't run that way. The ride to the airport took about an hour and checking in took some time. There was this group of Malaysian family ahead of me, first it was a few and soon more came to join in the queue. How I hate people like this. Even though I was involve in them sometimes :P Some of the ladies saw me and asked if I was travelling alone. I didn't want to explain much and just said "yes". They were so fascinated by that!

"Oh, like lonely planet that kind?"

I was clearly amused by them and that woke me up quite a bit. I bid Shirly and friend goodbye before going in. I have no idea how long the ride was gonna take, I'm just excited about touching Lao's soil. I spend a bloody 13RM on maggie mee and Ribeana on that flight, blame my hungry stomach.

The nice cooling weather greeted me when we touched down. I wasted no time in getting out and it's the fastest I've been so far. Hunted for a taxi counter and cab down to Youth Inn to meet Gloria. The taxi ride costed about 6 US and later I realise that there is no taxis in town, only from airport. Their's public transport? Tuk tuk, bicycle, motorcycle and by foot. Here's what Youth Inn looks like from the common walk way. Not bad actually. The info desk lady brought me up to Gloria's room and that woman was still in bed when I came. All she could do was scream when she saw me. Classic.I'm actually surprise at what mess one lone woman can create in a 3-people's room. Not that bad, but still surprise. While she washed up, I explored the area a little and checked out the bus tickets to Vang Vien. Gloria wanted to leave Vientiane since there is nothing much to see and do there. She's the boss, so I follow :) We (actually, she) packed up, checked out from the room and headed to change some cash. Before that Gloria was already telling me who she has met, the things she have done in Vientiane before I was here. Once we were on the street, a black guy just shouted across at us. He turns out to be one of the people Gloria has met the day before.

This guy (pictured below) was a little insane I should say. He kept pestering her and we were clearly VERY irritated by him. We manage to shake him off a little and this smart girl told me her plans..

Glor: "I'm so tempted to tell him you're my girlfriend, maybe he will leave us alone after that. But then, it might work the other way."

Grace: "Whatever it takes to get rid of him."He brought us to lunch at this beef noodles place. The food was nice, the tea was great, that bugger was still irritating. He keep asking if there's any secreats, anything he should know (I guess he's suspecting something) and telling Gloria how much he like her and stuff. Then finally the moment came..

Gloria: "What if I tell you I don't like men? As in I'm not interested in men?"

I was exploding inside me, the noodles nearly came out from my nose. I tried to contain, but can't helped it and smiled. That bugger notices me smiling and asked why. It took him awhile before realiseing that "we are a couple".

Bugger: "Oh, I should have guess it huh? So, that's the secreat."

His mood totally changed! WAHAHAHAHA! But before the whole thing ended, he asked me if I would allow Gloria to keep in contact with him. Lost from what to say, I looked at Gloria and she was smart enough to say, "She's a very jealous girl! She wouldn't like it." But that damn bugger wants to hear me say it.

Grace: "Yeah, it depends on her actually. But she knows I don't like it."

That bugger got no choice. Shook our hands and then it's bye bye. Before that he even asked.. "Are you guys gonna get married?"

What a question to ask.. and Gloria can reply, "Well, if she ask!"It's one heck of an experience. First day in Laos and this thing... Memories! Oh, the beef noodles were great by the way. They send you a huge ass bowl, you add your own vegetables and sauces. After lunch and all that dealing with that bugger. My new found girlfriend and I sipped on coconut by the Mekong River. It's a nice quite day, the weather was hot according to Gloria. She blames me for bringing the sun from Singapore. I told you I am a sunshine! We managed to explore the streets a little before rushing back to catch the bus to Vang Vien.
They say the bus journey will take abou 4 hours, but bloody hell it took 6. One thing while travelling in Laos, never trust their time estimation. Like Singapore's price menu, add in +++. The bus was old school, 40 seater bus or is it 50? The ass hurts quite a little but that was only the beginning. We arrived Vang Vien at around 7-ish. Too lazy to check out other guest houses, we settled at the one we were dropped at. Nice room, it's green once again.
Heading into the small town hunting for dinner and a tour to join. Gloria was asking me if the town reminds me of House of the Wax.. damn, it sure did. Every dinning place was playing re-runs of Friends. We found a nice tour to join and a nice place to dine.
Pizza and chicken was main course, both were really good. We watched the whole season 7 of Friends before leaving. The other food we keep eating in Laos other than noodle soup was banana pan cakes. Basically it's like roti prata but Laos style. The night was early and we decided to watch P.S I Love You on her laptop. It's me tired from all that travelling and waking up early, I knocked out half way.. It was a nice day from KL to Vientiane and then to Vang Vien.. The journey really began the next day..Now, let me introduce my girlfriend to y'all. Through out this trip, she took up the role of a mum, big sister, girlfriend and... everything under the sun.

Singapore - Kuala Lumpur (10th December, Backpacking style)

The whole trip was another rush. I got my coach tickets to KL, changed currency and packed just before the day I left. The 6 hours ride to KL was pretty much boring with nothing interesting to watch on TV (Except for the re-run of Mr Bean's Holiday and some cartoons). Arrived in KL at late noon, met Shirly and then I bunked at her hostel. We left my bags there and she brought me out for dinner and get a hitch of KL's transport system.
They call this Chicken Nepoleon, and it's only 10RM. Basically it's hot dog wrapped with ham, cheese and chicken. As you can see, deep fried; sinful. I've been to this place before with the Gold Team the other time I was in KL. Looks like they serve really good food!

Mee Raja, they call this lady. In english it meant Emperor's Noodles, pretty tasty but a little too salty for me. Shirly was trying to stuff me with food, I could hardly finish this noodle after my chicken. This dish is for 7RM.

And this is a must-try drink when you visit the place. It's made up of mango and all kinds of fruits. I forgot what's the name, but it's really famous. The mango was super, you can really taste those bites

Here's Shirly and me! Thank you sister for offering me a place to sleep that night? I can so imagine myself spending the night in KL's airport if it weren't for you. Thanks also for arranging my transport to LCCT early next morning for my flight! Again, if it's weren't for you, I'm pretty sure the taxi driver will kill me with the fare.

Aside from food and friendship in KL, my eyes were opened to KL's transport system. On the street, you can literally just flag a bus down! Buses doesn't come on time and for some bus company, 2RM is all you need to ride the bus all day. I gave thanks that Singapore's transport system wasn't ran the way it was in KL.

After dinner, I bought some stuff and it's back to the hostel. I helped out Shirly and friends with their english homework and camped for the night. The journey shall continue in my next post of "Kuala Lumpur - Vientiane - Vang Vien"

Holiday mood

I missed last Sunday's gathering but thankfully made it for this Sunday's. Ate, talked, drank and watched movies. I fell in love with Bailey's Irish Cream, gotta get some on the way back. Hopefully we continue the tradition and have a count down at Wan's place. Maybe a change would be nice also.. I don't know.

Anyway, I'm so looking forward to Laos trip! Yes, the rugby trip got cancelled but me and Gloria are still going up. All thanks to that woman's "pleading", I gave in to that bloody expensive air ticket. Never really know and heard about Laos before, Dad say Laos is like Cambodia.. In his words it means nothing much to see, buy and do. That might just be good, a nice and quiet get away.

I'm crossing my fingers to get the 10th off as well, so I can go up to KL earlier and spend more time with Shirly. She has offered me a tour round her area and even got someone to drive me to the airport on the 11th morning. Good to have friends around the world :)

Get most things done tomorrow and then off to Laos!! I am finally settling into the holiday mood now.. :D
